Parco Archeologico di Elea Velia
The ancient city of Elea, was a cultural capital of the Mediterranean. Homeland of Parmenides and Zeno, founders of the Eleatic philosophical school, can be considered the cradle of Western philosophical thought. The most important monument is the Porta Rosa, the most ancient example of a semicircular arch with a keystone, a synthesis of the mathematical knowledge of the classical age. The castle of the Angevin period is gravely placed on the foundations of an ancient temple.
Enchanting medieval village, set among centuries-old olive trees and a crystalline sea, where time seems to have stopped. Characteristic the alleys that wind throughout the country, dominated by the parish church dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, rich in precious paintings dating back to the sixteenth century and the eighteenth-century marquisale palace built by the family Pappacoda, feudal lords of the country. The Palace, directly overlooks the expanse of centuries-old olive trees that slope down to the sea to the small marina marina where still today is practiced the ancient fishing of anchovies with menaica, elected to garrison slow-food.
You can not miss a visit to the archaeological park of Paestum. A walk among the ancient temples maybe at sunset. Very easy to reach by train from the station of Ascea in just 30 minutes.
Capo Palinuro One of the jewels of the Cilento National Park where the myth meets reality. It is said, in fact, that this promontory takes its name from the faithful helmsman of Aeneas, Palinuro. According to legend, the God Neptune, in exchange for the promise made to Venus to protect his son Aeneas during his wandering, he asked that his helmsman be sacrificed. Thrown into the sea, Palinuro, reached the beaches of the Cilentan coast but was mistaken for sea monster and killed by its inhabitants: so the place of his death still bears his name today. But Capo Palinuro hides faunal treasures thanks to the persistence of a marine environment Uncontaminated, characterized by a succession of caves and coves, among which the Blue Grotto stands out call for the play of refraction of sunlight, which filtering from a deep tunnel, is reflected on the rocky walls and paints the water of a beautiful turquoise shade. The boat trips that leave from the port of Palinuro end with a stop in the Bay of Buondormire with the possibility for guests to take a bath in its crystal clear waters.
Vallo della Lucania
From the inhabitants of Cilento considered as the capital of Cilento, Vallo della Lucania is the administrative and economic center of the territory. Particularly spectacular are the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, with the Doric colonnade to pay homage to Paestum, and Piazza dei Martiri in honor of the de'Mattia Brothers, executed by the Bourbons following the Risorgimento movements that in 1828 involved the whole Cilento. To be visited the Diocesan Museum, the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Cathedral of San Pantaleone.
Badia di Pattano
The Italo-Greek monastery of the Badia di Pattano is the only one in southern Italy to preserve all the structures of this kind of more fully preserved buildings in Southern Italy. It is located near Pattano, a hamlet of Vallo della Lucania. The earliest testimony is attested to the year 993 but its construction should be preceded by more than two centuries, probably at the end of the Greek-Gothic war.
